Trying Umami

We decided to try a new sushi restaurant on Yadkin Road today. If you don't pay attention and follow your GPS, you will drive right by it; just look for the small sign for "Umami," and make a sharp right turn as you drive south on Yadkin Road about a mile from the FT Bragg Yadkin Gate. The restaurant has a small bistro-like atmosphere and sits about 20 costumers, including the seated counter space.

The inside is pretty cozy and while you wait you can smell the tasty aroma of the made to order food being prepared in the kitchen. Although, it is a tiny place as you sit close to the other customers, you can listen to what their conversation. You can discreetly talk about issues otherwise your next door will know it.

Tempura Udon

The tempura udon had mushrooms, green onions and, unlike other noodles, udon noodles tend to be thicker and chewier. The tempura shrimp were light and crispy and the soup base had a mild broth with a slight taste of soy sauce and mirin.

Honey Salmon Rolls

The honey salmon rolls were deep fried, wrapped in seaweed and topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce and the rolls had no rice, the crunchiness of the rolls melts in your mouth.

Half and Half with 2 rolls

I also enjoyed their half and half sushi rolls that were shaped like a cone, it had spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, crab meat, avocado wrapped in soy paper,

Hand Rolls Half &Half

The hand sushi rolls reminds me of a quick stop sushi place in Oahu, Hawaii where they make a cone shaped sushi while you wait.

The only thing that I didn't like was the sizes of the honey salmon roll pieces, which I thought were small. But other than that, I enjoyed it.
